This month’s book club selection is Infidel by Ayaan Hirsi Ali. I haven’t finished it yet, but I’m inspired by it already. I’ve read a lot of memoirs/stories of people who come from a place of oppression and abuse. Ali seems a rare example of someone who really strives to make sense of her pastContinue reading “Infidel”

The Eyes Have It
I’m reading a really long book. I’m enjoying it, but worried I wouldn’t be able to finish it by the book group meeting at the end of January, which I am supposed to lead, so I also got the 40-hour audio book from the library. Since I’m in the car an hour a day toContinue reading “The Eyes Have It”
Click it and trick it
I’m reading a book on clicker training called Reaching the Animal Mind. I’m ambivalent and have skipped entire sections dealing with the training of dolphins at Sea World-type establishments. I don’t doubt that dolphins can be trained to do marvelous tricks, but I’m uncomfortable with it because I am opposed to marine theme parks. AContinue reading “Click it and trick it”
Old School
Last night we discussed Old School in my book group. My friend and I had so many insightful remarks that the leader asked us if we’d lead the discussion in January of Pillars of the Earth. Spoiler: Old School is about a prep school boy trying to win a literary contest so he can meetContinue reading “Old School”
The Cure
I was listening to New Moon on the drive to San Diego Thanksgiving Day. Rob was asleep. Traffic was slow. I was bored. Turned it off. We went to see the movie. It was boring. I’m cured. No need to finish listening to New Moon or to get the next two books on CD. IContinue reading “The Cure”
The movies might actually be superior to the novels
I can’t possibly be the first person to critique the Twilight novels on their literary worth. I can’t imagine that these are original ideas. I discussed earlier what the appeal is, allow me now to tell you what is wrong with the writing. It’s so wrong, I can’t imagine there wasn’t an editor who said,Continue reading “The movies might actually be superior to the novels”
Reading out loud
I attended the first meeting of my book group last night. A friend of mine attended the last session, where they selected books for the next six months, and warned me that the other ladies were, “uhm… older.” While I’d prefer to socialize with more people of my age group and exact life stage, IContinue reading “Reading out loud”
Nemesis
At the risk of offending someone I don’t know, but who shares the pronunciation of my name (I’m guessing), I want to share the discovery of “The Kari Safari,” not to be confused with Rhymes with Safari. Interestingly, her blog appears to be mostly movie reviews. Interesting, because of course, I am trained in theContinue reading “Nemesis”
Who doesn’t Jean-Marc Genereaux love?
Last night’s performance finale of SYTYDC made me want to revisit Blake the Judge‘s earlier work as a contestant on Season 1 of SYTYCD. When he talked about what is expected of the Top 4, I was all like, “How would you know, you were cut from the Top 6!” Burn! That’s not fair though,Continue reading “Who doesn’t Jean-Marc Genereaux love?”
Pilgrims and Canadians
I know I’m probably supposed to write something about Thanksgiving, but I’d rather talk about So You Think You Can Dance Canada. That’s right, I’ve got dual dance citizenship. I forgot I got the Canadian channel that runs SYTYCDC, so I missed the first few episodes. Interestingly, I wasn’t really that into it at first.Continue reading “Pilgrims and Canadians”
