What’s with this conceit of having an entire student body work at a country club for the summer? Or even hang out at a country club for the summer? (I’m talking to you Beverly Hills, 90210 and Saved By The Bell and copycat High School Musical 2) I mean, I’ll defend Beverly Hills, 90210 toContinue reading “While we’re on the subject”

Three things I did not enjoy about seeing the Simpsons on the big screen
The stupid kids movie trailers. The phony laughs from the male moviegoers, who want to make sure everyone else in the theatre knows that they got the joke. Not being able to press the TiVo instant replay button to see how the hammer got stuck in Homer’s eye. Other than that, it was fan-diddly-tastic!
High standards
I simply cannot vote for anyone, even at the primary level for City Council, who has a typo on her website.
Itchy typing finger
Yesterday’s bee sting was a bizarre little event. I was walking Isis and swinging my arm with abandon when I felt the sting and looked down to see the little bugger on my hand. It took some shaking, and some squealing, to get it off. Stung quite a bit, but by the end of theContinue reading “Itchy typing finger”
Shopgirl
I strenuously object to all negative reviews posted here for Shopgirl. The movie, like the novella, gets it right. Can’t remember the last movie that made me reach for a Kleenex. That’s not why I recommend it though. I don’t know that a scene about a man taking his girlfriend to the shrink after sheContinue reading “Shopgirl”
I’ve never been known for my taste
Of the last three movies I saw, none of them were good. But for some reason, the least likely candidate was my favorite. You’d think I’d have more positive things to saw about my childhood friends, Transformers, or that the very explosiveness or Bruce Willisness of Die Harderer would have carried it along. But no,Continue reading “I’ve never been known for my taste”
I knew that would happen!
Note to self: Don’t be lazy. Don’t book a motel through a third-party website that malfunctions and then makes you telephone the third-party (in Bangalore) and they quote you a higher price than the website. Especially when the motel is in your same state, and not Bangalore. Then, do not let them swipe your cardContinue reading “I knew that would happen!”
Ugly, Pretty and Special
I just finished the Uglies trilogy. (Yeah, it’s that young adult series. Seriously, you want to fight about it?) Pretty smart trilogy. I’m sad it’s over, and sort of sad about the ending, although there was no other way for it to end. That happens a lot, I guess. The series takes place in aContinue reading “Ugly, Pretty and Special”
Not guilty
I enjoy the “new music mix” on the new, ridiculously named Crave 95 radio station. But I object to the automated DJ introducing songs by calling them guilty pleasures. “Dirrty” is a guilty pleasure. So is anything by Britney Spears. Animotion’s “Obsession” is not. (It’s an 80’s classic.) Neither is Lenny Kravitz’ “American Woman.” WhatContinue reading “Not guilty”
Heroine chic
As I mentioned, I was thoroughly enjoying Lucky, a memoir by Alice Sebold, author of The Lovely Bones. Or maybe I didn’t mention the enjoying part, just the grisliness of the rape depiction. The rape is described about a bajillion more times throughout the book, as she reports it to the police and her parents.Continue reading “Heroine chic”
